I absolutely love Kate’s Polly Push Lock purse by Mulberry! We’ve seen Kate carrying around this lovely bag a few times now…once when she was at Heathrow airport boarding the plane to Canada for her Royal Tour in late June 2011….and more recently when she was photographed leaving a salon in late September. As many of you already know, I personally saw Kate Middleton in the flesh at Topshop on Sept 26th (read my account here) and it was this Mulberry purse that Kate had with her when I saw her.
Now I love this Mulberry purse for many reasons. It is simple, it is BEAUTIFUL, and it is classic. I think this is one style of purse that every woman should have. Actually, in all honesty, many women over the decades have indeed had this style of purse in their wardrobe. It is THE ULTIMATE staple of classic lady-like dressing. I say this because this Mulberry bag is actually the offspring of a similar purse that was adorned by many many women in the 1950s and 1960s….the “Kelly bag” by Hermes.
I’ve said this many times before that I think one of Kate Middleton’s own style role models is the beautiful Grace Kelly. We all know how similar Kate’s Wedding dress was to Grace Kelly’s wedding dress, but beyond that, I have seen Kate wear so many dresses, gowns, and coats that are so much in the style of Grace Kelly.
Like Kate, Grace was a style icon and was loved for remaining both down to earth and true to her own elegant style….something we can all recognize in Kate Middleton.
But lets talk about this Kelly Bag by Hermes for a moment. The Kelly bag was made famous in the 1950s by Grace when she was photographed using the big boxy bag to hide her pregnant belly from the paparazzi. She was photographed with it many many times, and of course it took the fashion scene by storm. The purse was actually created in the 1930s by Hermes and originally named “Sac à dépêches” until Hermes re-named the bag after Grace Kelly in the 1950s (this wouldn’t be the first time a company named a purse after a woman…think Pippa Middleton and Modalu!).
There is no question about it. I, and every other woman out there, needs a bag in this style…whether Mulberry’s Polly Push Lock purse, Hermes’ Kelly bag, or something just like it (and much more affordable!). If you want a Mulberry or Hermes original, unfortunately it will have you breaking the bank. Kate’s Polly Push lock purse is still available online and at Selfridges in London for a whopping £800 or $1300.
But if you think $1300 USD for a purse is crazy expensive, check out the Kelly bags by Hermes. Hermes’ Kelly bags are much much MUCH more expensive and there is actually a 6 month wait for anyone who wants to place an order with the company. A new one direct from Hermes will cost your around $8000 USD.
If you take a look on ebay, there are a number of “Kelly bags” going for thousands of dollars. I even found one listed at $22,000!!!!! Most are listed inbetween $2000 and $8000. I really like this one which looks very much like Kate’s Polly Push Lock purse by Mulberry.
Since many of us are not made of money, I’ve put together a few affordable alternatives to Kate’s Mulberry purse and Grace Kelly’s bag by Hermes. Hope you love them as much as I do!
I want to start off by saying that this purse from Zara is my utmost favorite Kate (and Grace!) inspired bag. Named the “Fashion City Bag with Flap”, it is very VERY similar to Kate’s Polly Push Lock Mulberry purse. Priced at $169.00 USD this bag is perfect in style and in price! It also comes in black or beige!
Topshop also has a nice selection of what they are terming “lady bags” and which are in the style of Kate’s Mulberry bag and Grace’s Hermes bag. They range from $70 USD to $175 USD. For my Canadian friends, these same Topshop “lady bags” are also available at the Hudson Bay Company for much nicer prices here and here.
For those of you looking for a real good deal, check out this lady bag from H&M which is similar to Kate’s Mulberry bag. It is priced at only $19.95 USD! Get the look without going broke!!!
If you’d like to get your hands on a real life Hermes Kelly bag and are not willing to sell everything you own to do so, the website www.hermesbagforsale.com claims to offer a selection of Hermes Kelly bags for 75% off….although the colours are not THAT fantastic.
That’s all for now! More Kate inspired items coming your way soon.
